Suozzi Calls on Shtzer to Address Property Taxes

Candidate for Governor Calls on Opponent to Join His Longstanding Campaign Against High Property Taxes

In anticipation of Eliot Spitzer's speech in Syracuse on economic development tomorrow, Democratic candidate for Governor Tom Suozzi today called on his opponent to follow his lead and make property tax relief a centerpiece of his campaign.

"Two years ago, I fought Albany for property tax relief and won a Medicaid spending cap that is saving New York's taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. New Yorkers pay the highest local taxes in the United States—72% above the national average—and I've made property tax relief a central focus of my campaign for Governor. I hope that my opponent finally reverses course, joins me in addressing one of the most pressing issues facing our State, and does as I've done and makes property tax relief a centerpiece of his campaign" said Suozzi.

As the founder of Fix Albany, a movement to bring accountability to New York's dysfunctional State Legislature, Tom Suozzi has been one of the State's leading voices on property tax relief and government reform. As President of the New York State Association of County Executives, Suozzi led the successful fight for a Medicaid spending cap that is saving New York's taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.

In both his speech announcing his candidacy last month and his State of Nassau County address last week, Suozzi placed a strong emphasis on the need for property tax relief. In his State of the County Address, Suozzi pledged to be "a Governor of this State that knows how real the property tax problem is and as Governor I will make the changes necessary to solve the problem."

Two weeks ago, while in Rochester to deliver his first major economic development speech, Eliot Spitzer devoted only one sentence to property taxes.
